Trash-sorting volunteer teams established

2018-09-10

Trash-sorting promotional activities were held at Yangpu District's Wujiaochang area on Wednesday.

Shanghai is building up trash-sorting volunteer teams to instruct residents and promote the city’s garbage classification campaign.

According to the Shanghai Volunteer Association, a recruitment drive has been running since August 28. The first batch of seven volunteer teams are being built – one city level and six district level teams to cover Yangpu, Jing’an, Changning, Fengxian, Songjiang and Chongming districts.

Shanghai has set a target of achieving a garbage classification rate of 100 percent in the above six districts, as well as in enterprises and institutions, within the year.

The districts of Huangpu, Xuhui, Putuo, Minhang, Jiading and Jinshan are expected to catch up next year.

In Hongkou, Baoshan, Qingpu and the Pudong New Area, the garbage classification rate needs to be no less than 50 percent by 2019. By 2020, full coverage is expected around the city.

Also, the city government has named the 5th of each month “Trash-sorting Awareness Day,” starting from this month. Volunteers will organize activities to spread trash-sorting knowledge and provide advice on citizens’ garbage disposing "manners."

“Trash-sorting is not difficult to promote among the younger generation, but for some elderly people, it will take some time to recognize different types of garbage and cultivate sorting habits,” volunteer Zhao Lei said.

Trash-sorting booklets will be distributed to neighborhoods, schools, hospitals, enterprises and institutions starting from this month to promote the campaign.
